Your Hands to a Hurting World
February 2010
Dear Coworkers,
CAMA has hit the ground running this New Year, responding to the devastating 7.0 magnitude earthquake in Haiti last month. We have partnered with the Haitian Association of The Christian and Missionary Alliance, the Alliance team and church in the Dominican Republic, and other sister organizations to provide shelter, food, water, and medical care. Once the immediate relief needs are met, CAMA hopes to transition into long-term development work to bring physical help and spiritual hope and light to this difficult place.
As is my custom at this time of year, my focus will be on thanksgiving, rather than an appeal. I want to highlight how God has blessed through your generosity and give you an idea of how your gifts were used.
Giving to the CAMA Advance Fund for the 2008-2009 fiscal year (July 2008 to June 2009) totaled $1,490,039. For the first half of the 2009-10 fiscal year, giving totaled $808,200. These funds have been used to provide compensation (salary, insurance, children’s education, and travel and field budgets) to our 54 staff serving in 16 countries.
Because of your faithful giving, CAMA sent three new workers this year to join our team in Southeast Asia. Projects are great, but unless there are qualified and committed personnel on the ground to develop and maintain the work, nothing will get done. Your generous giving has been a tremendous encouragement to CAMA staff with whom you join hands to reach a hurting world. THANK YOU!
In addition to providing for our workers, you have responded to a number of special appeals for various natural disasters and political crises around the world. You assisted Sri Lankan refugees recovering from the horrors of a civil war with donations of more than $15,000. Your gifts were used to purchase food, tents, household goods, and teaching supplies for children.
Burkina Faso flood victims were blessed with more than $143,000 in aid. These funds were disbursed through Alliance churches to people of all ethnic and religious backgrounds, regardless of whether they were church members. Grain, household supplies and shelter were provided. Jeff Amstutz, CAMA’s business/medical coordinator and regional coordinator for Africa, reported:
“Relief to the victims of Ouagadougou has not only responded to the needs of the victims but was done in such a way as to build the Name of Christ in the nation and before leaders. [This] opens doors for future response of the local C&MA church, ACCEDES/CAMA, and the C&MA mission.
“In addition to the direct contribution to the government program, this combined relief effort provided: 8 tons of rice, 8 tons of corn, 7 sacks of sweet potatoes, 365 mats, 673 sheets, many bundles of used clothing, 139 pots, and thousands of dollars of medical supplies, along with follow-up visits.”
Typhoon survivors in the Philippines and Vietnam were encouraged by more than $26,000 in assistance. Be encouraged by this report from the pastor of one church that blessed its community.
The brethren here in Park Place, Cainta Rizal, were encouraged to reach out and distribute relief goods to the flood victims. Truly the Spirit of the Lord was working with us. There were about 50 new believers who accepted Jesus after the gospel presentation. Truly, much rejoicing filled our hearts, and everybody went home blessed.
Finally, it is a joy to report that you gave more than $76,000 to the Moringa Thanksgiving Appeal. Half of this will be used to plant more than 12,600 trees in Asia and Africa, thereby providing nutrition for the poor. The other half will provide support for people like David and Doris Strong who developed this project in Cambodia.
What does all of the above tell me? In the words of the great China missionary, Hudson Taylor, “God’s work done in God’s way will never lack for God’s support.” You have been used of the Lord to bring these words to life. THANK YOU!
I look forward with confidence to 2010, no matter what economic forecasters may say, because I have seen God work through His faithful servants in 2009. It was a joy to partner with you last year, and I invite you to continue your partnership with us this year. If you would like more information on any of the above projects or the overall work of CAMA Services, please call my direct line at 719-265-2038 or check out the priority projects on our Web site at www.camaservices.org.
With deep gratitude,
