Honduras Medical Care for Children
Priority Project – 4-47400-01-00
Olancho, Honduras
Dr. Sheree Lynch reports a high incidence of congenital heart disease among children in Olancho, Honduras, where she serves in a medical clinic. A patient trip to the capital for a diagnostic echocardiogram requires four hours of travel and the test itself runs $275. The cost of that travel, as well as the exam, is more than many patients can afford. And even if they could afford the cost of the trip, sadly there is no surgical treatment available for them in Honduras.
To address these challenges, Dr. Lynch arranged for the purchase of an upgraded echocardiogram machine at the clinic so that children can be diagnosed locally. She has gained certification in echocardiogram screening, and arranged with three non-profit organizations to provide medical care in the United States for those children diagnosed with heart conditions.
The total cost of the machine was $79,900, with a balance left to raise of only $6,200. More than 75 children have been identified with congenital heart disease in the last year and 50 of these require surgical intervention. Seventeen have been sent to the United States for treatment, and another six have been accepted into the program. Since more children walk through the clinic doors than there are resources to treat them, they are prioritized according to the urgency of their surgery. You can make a difference in the life of one of these precious children.
Your gift of $75 will provide for the cost for a child’s echocardiogram.
