- Clear conversion and call to gospel ministry through demonstration and proclamation
- A recognized bachelor’s degree
- Two or more years of experience in health/fitness field
- Modern Language Aptitude Test (MLAT) score of 50 or higher
- Completion of Missions Perspectives course
- Willingness to work in cooperation with the local team and help advance its goals
- Group fitness certification
- International community development experience and/or education
- Experience working with those who practice the country’s majority religion
- Complete a crash course in language learning and adjust to the local culture
- Maintain good working relationships with team members
- Share the team’s commitment to see community-based movements from darkness to light, resulting in multiplying, sustained communities of faith throughout the city
- Be willing to participate in mentoring and developing local partners, interns, and prospective teammates
- Be at the center a minimum of 3 days per week, co-directing a women’s holistic health program with a mental health professional
Timeline for Deployment:
This position is based in a seaside town of nearly 100,000 people, most of whom are familiar with the established center where the worker will serve. Residential areas are more primitive; however, due to a thriving tourism industry, several amenities are available to escape daily stresses. Some Western fast-food chains and upscale restaurants are available.
Candidates should be prepared for a desert climate with little to no rainfall and a dry, unrelenting heat during the four months of summer, when temperatures commonly reach 120 degrees Fahrenheit. During the rest of the year, the weather is pleasant.
Dress varies, with most women of the majority faith wearing head coverings. Many locals and expats wear conservative, Western apparel.
Work and Living Environment:
The worker will reside in a small city with modern amenities, including hotels and resorts. Taxis are inexpensive and easy to secure. Buses facilitate efficient travel to the capital, which is a few hours away and one of the largest, most modernized Middle Eastern cities. A small airport allows for connecting flights from the capital to international destinations. Candidates should be aware of the moderate risk of kidnapping and anti-Western sentiment.
Status of Christian Witness:
Conversion from the predominant belief to Christianity is illegal, as is public evangelizing. Therefore, workers should use caution when openly discussing their faith. Nonetheless, religion is a consistent conversation topic; opportunities to authentically share the good news in word and deed within relationships are frequent.
Workers will be expected to complete three to six months of intense Arabic language study, most likely in the capital city.
The city has respectable health-care facilities. Serious issues are referred to the capital, which has exceptional medical facilities and well-trained doctors; most medications are readily available.
Expectations for Spouse:
Spousal roles vary based on the spouse’s gifts, abilities, and training as well as the team’s needs. The spouse’s family commitments also play a role in determining these expectations. Opportunities including teaching English are available.
Children’s Educational Plan and Options:
The city has a growing international K–12 school with a strong British curriculum and several expatriate teachers; instruction is given in English. It should be noted that 95 percent of the student body is Arab.
This is a partially funded position with the expectation that once a candidate is appointed, efforts will be made to raise 75 percent of support costs through the applicant’s network of friends and family, local church, or other resources. Information on support costs will be made available upon application. Training and/or coaching in fund-raising is available.
CAMA Services is the relief and development arm of the C&MA, an evangelical denomination committed to planting churches both in the United States and internationally. Because of the nature of this ministry opportunity, being healthy in all aspects of life is part of the required qualifications. As candidates move forward in the consideration process for appointment, these will be assessed.
Applicants should be aware that serving in the international world often requires a higher degree of grace and flexibility. For example, overseas teams can be suddenly and unexpectedly impacted by illness, government decisions, financial realities, team changes, or other factors beyond the team’s control. The challenge for applicants is that these factors can sometimes necessitate the sudden redefining of a position, which may take place before, during, or after the application/interview process has begun or is completed.
